2008 is here and so too are 2 new Rat Races; we are pleased to announce that alongside the new Birmingham event launched just before Christmas, we are good to go in BRIGHTON and NEWCASTLE with two new Rat Races. We will be running the events in these super cool locations on the new Rat Race Nine 2 Five format, giving participants the opportunity to compete over a Saturday-full of action, adrenalin and adventure.
1.) Brighton – 28th June 2008
2.) Newcastle – 30th August 2008

1.) Brighton Rocks
Brighton will be ratified on 28th June this year so pack your Speedos and your bucket and spade as we are off to the Beach. From our base on Brighton Seafront, right next to the Palace pier, we will be burying ourselves from head to toe in Brighton culture; think Regency splendour, fish and chips, Brighton Rock and Art Deco. Also think water! You’ll be going in one way or another, so make sure you bring the armbands! The event will also feature a fresh and exciting slice of event village entertainment to greet you all when you return from the course…the “M.A.D R.A.T” mountain bike trials comp will be running from our event village with heats throughout the day. It will culminate in a final trials stunt spectacular when the best riders in the country go head to head in this championship comp. You never know, perhaps Rat Racers will get a shot at MTB Trials too, as part of the event format! For more details on the Brighton event, click here to go the Brighton web pages.
2.) Toon Army of Rats
Strap in and prepare for a spectacular event on Tyneside. The industrial powerhouse of the North East will be transformed into the latest Rat Race adventure course this 30st August. Expect running, biking, kayaking, parkour, navigation and some awesome ropes on one of the city’s most famous landmarks. We won’t tell you where….but there are some classic Newcastle landmarks and you’ll be hanging off one of them this summer when you join the Rat Race! Welcome to Geordieland! For more information on Newcastle, click here to go the Newcastle web pages.
3.) Rat Race Nine 2 Five explained The new events in Brighton and Newcastle will run on our brand new Rat Race “Nine 2 Five” format, together with the Birmingham event, running on 15th March this year in conjunction with the Outdoor Show from the NEC. This format involves pairs and teams of 3 competing in an event that lasts for up to 8 hours on a Saturday, starting at Nine and ending by Five. But this won’t be your normal nine ‘til five…First up, you will sprint out of the Start gate and into the “Mean Streets” prologue, running amok around the city streets on foot* collecting a pile of checkpoints in a sub-hour timeframe – fast and furious with adrenalin speeding you onwards. Then you will get back to the event village and pick up your bikes to set out on our “adventure loops” – connecting ropes, kayaks, navigation and special stages together, all the while with the clock ticking nearer to Five PM and the end of the event. When you have completed as much of the loops as you want, it’s back to the village for one more transition to foot and a final session beating the streets once more, collecting in more mad-cap checkpoints in the city centre. Afterwards enjoy the bands and exchange tales in the event village, before moving onto the party later that evening. For more info on the Nine 2 Five, click here.
*For Birmingham, the prologue foot activities are centred at the NEC, with later Mean Streets activity in the City Centre, before the final dash back to the NEC for the 8th hour.
4.) Official Charity Partner - Teenage Canser Trust
For the very first time, we have joined up with Teenage Cancer Trust (TCT), a UK-wide organization supporting teenagers with cancer. TCT funds specialist teenage units in NHS hospitals, providing an environment where teenagers can get on with being teenagers, and which we hope will improve survival rates and ensure a better future for patients and their families. There are currently 8 units – at least another 14 are needed to reach every single young person with cancer in the UK. This year Teenage Cancer Trust is working with us in Brighton, Newcastle and Edinburgh to raise funds to build new units in these cities. They’re offering great charity packages if you pledge to raise funds for them and, in addition, the charity will have input into the course and provide activities in the event villages. So loosen your purse-strings and expect something a little out of the ordinary!

5.) Outdoor Show Offer continues for those entering Birmingham Rat Race
Those of you up for an early season outing, the first Rat Race of the year kicks off in Birmingham as part of the Outdoors Show. Based at the NEC, we will be striking out into the city and taking in an epic day’s worth of Rat Race Nine 2 Five adventure. For those that fancy coming back to the Outdoors Show on the Sunday after the race and browsing their amazing array of adventure equipment, exhibitors and things to do, you can benefit from our 2 tickets for £20 offer when you buy online and quote retrace when prompted in the promo box.
