16 April 2008

Spring has sprung and a smorgasbord of new events has blossomed along with it for us to tell you about! It’s been a busy few weeks here in Rat HQ as we have been working hard to secure these dates for the 2008 calendar. As you can see on our website at www.ratraceadventure.com, it’s now crammed full of urban adventure across the British Isles! Can we possibly fit anymore in? Probably…
1.) Rat Races across the water – Belfast and Galway join the Rat Pack
2.) Rat Races across the world
3.) A Dirty Weekend in Scotland
4.) Racy offers for Rat Racers
5.) Rat Race City Updates
1.) Rat Races across the water
This summer, the Rat Race arrives on the Emerald Isle. We have 2 brand new 9 to 5 events lined up for late summer 2008.
Belfast Rat Race
The Belfast Rat Race will take place on Saturday 9th August from an event village at City Hall and promises an action-packed day out in the new and regenerated Belfast. The city is alive with culture, humming with development and awash with adventure, Rat-Race style! With its compact size, picturesque location between mountain and coast coupled with a fascinating history both modern and ancient, Belfast is a defiant city that has recently undergone an epic transformation into the beating heart of the vibrant, invigorated Northern Ireland. The scope for the Rat Race is untapped here and with the enthusiastic support of Belfast City Council plus with a team of excellent planners including local Adventure Racing Legend Brian Elliott, we are getting the very very most out of the city. Check it out here.
Galway Rat Race
Next up it’s time to say “Failte go Gaillimh” as Rat racing is set to reach the wild West Coast of Ireland for this Saturday 6th September in Galway City. The city will host the first Rat Race event in the Republic of Ireland and it’s sure to be quite a show. Its youthful, vibrant and cosmopolitan nature has long served as an inspiration to countless musicians and artists throughout the centuries and hopefully it will enthuse hundreds of adventurers set to immerse themselves in this melting pot of culture. From its legendary bars to the city's network of pretty streets, lanes and canals, Galway City oozes craic at every turn. Be prepared for a warm welcome and a cool adventure in the home of the Tribes! Check it out here.
2.) Rat Races across the world
In May, Adventure Planning Director Gary Tompsett jumps on a plane and jets off to some places a very long way away. His mission is simple: Ratify the World. We will bring you news very shortly of our first Southern Hemisphere event as the Rat goes global at the tail end of 2008, complete with the where, what and how to. We’ll point you to the travel and the accommodation options to ensure that YOU can come too!
3.) A Dirty Weekend in Scotland
If you fancy swapping man-hole covers for mountains for a weekend, how about this for a racy little number this summer? On 5th/ 6th July, the Rat Pack will be getting down and dirty in the country and we invite you to our very own Dirty Weekend. This multi-sport Festival will pack adventure racing, mountain biking and trail running into a 2 day format, all based from the grounds of sensational Traquair House in the Scottish Borders. Check it all out at www.dirtyweekendadventure.com and read below for some racy offers to let you get in on the action with special Rat Race discounts on entry. This is one Dirty Weekend where keeping it clean just is not on the menu.
4.) Racy offers for Rat Racers
For those of you wanting to get involved in the Dirty Weekend, there are 3 events you can enter: The ACE Race adventure race (www.aceraces.com), the Polaris mountain bike challenge (www.polarischallenge.com) and the Dirty Dozen 12km trail run (www.dirtydozen12k.com). For all the Dirty Weekend events, you enter on these individual event websites. Quote promo code DIRTYRAT101 when prompted for a 10% special Rat Race discount on entry. Details of how it all stitches together can be found at www.dirtyweekendadventure.com. All events take place within the Dirty Weekend on 5th and 6th July, two weeks before the Edinburgh Rat Race.
ACE Races 1 Day Series
For those of you in the South, why not try an ACE Race as an ideal Rat Race training event? These 5 hour Saturday races kick off in Sussex on the 10th May and run 3 times throughout the summer. You can save 10% on regular entry by entering the promo code ACERAT101 when prompted. Open to solos, pairs and teams of three, they are good entry level events that allow you to get to grips with navigation, running and biking in some really cool locations across the South East. Check it all out and enter at www.aceraces.com.
For those of you north of the Border, you can also get yourselves a discount at a 1 day, or rather “Wan Dae” race, as the Scottish Adventure Racing Series brings its Wan Dae event back for a one-off special on 20th September. This might be a nice season closer for you, especially with a discount of 10% off entry available for all solos, pairs, threesomes and foursomes. Just quote WANRAT101 when entering at www.scottishadventureracing.com. Entries for the Wan Dae open on 01st May. Look out for news from the Wan Dae crew if you are signed up to the mailing list.
