1.) NEW EVENT - Sheffield 1st/2nd August 2009
Steel City will be the venue for our first adventure challenge foray into Yorkshire this 1st and 2nd August. Watch out for a special climbing theme to this adventure event, as we fuse the uber-urban landscape of South Yorkshire and the northern grit of a city famous for its climbing heritage. Sheffield Rat Race opens with an early bird deal on the 1st March with Mean Streets and Nine 2 Five options. The Sheffield event will follow in the footsteps of our London and Edinburgh adventure challenges and will be filmed for Channel 4 so pull out your Saturday or Sunday best for this one as your Mum might see you on the Telly! More info can be found at www.ratraceadventure.com.
2.) Rat Race Adventure Store Opening and £300 Satmap 10 GPS up for grabs
Box-fresh and resplendent with shiny new gadgets, smart adventure threads and fully-functional footwear comes the Rat Race Adventure Store. To mark its opening on 9th March, we are giving away to one lucky Ratfan a superb Satmap 10 GPS unit (worth £300) + county mapping software (worth £30). And for 5 runners up, there are some seriously smart Rat Race urban adventure challenge goody bags waiting for you which include an Adventure Medical Kits AMK "Ultralight and Watertight" 7 pack, worth £29.99 plus a pair of Bridgedale socks (the speed demon or speed diva) worth £11.99 a piece. All those who have entered into a 2009 Rat Race event (Mean Streets, Nine 2 Five, Weekender classes) OR made a purchase from the Rat Race Adventure Store by 31st March 2009, where you will be saving cash too, as a flat 10% discount applies on purchases until 31st March too! Ts and Cs for the offer can be found on our NEW COMPETITIONS PAGE at http://www.ratraceadventure.com/competitions/. Full Ts and Cs can be found on this page too.
3.) Monthly Competitions
The Satmap comp and the runners' up prizes marks the first of our Rat Fans comps. Watch out every month as we bring you competitions and offers unique to Rat Racers. These can be found on our new competitions page at http://www.ratraceadventure.com/competitions/. We've also started up our monthly "Best Biog" comp which will run throughout the year. So if you are entering an event (or have entered and you want to spruce up your patter), then get out the Keats, Burns or Shakespeare and brush up on that poetic license. Where the entry form asks for a Team Biog, let rip with something funny, memorable or just downright surreal and you could win the monthly gong for the best Team Biog. Each member of the chosen team will win a selection of prizes from our sponsors, including Sea To Summit dry bags, Bridgedale technical socks and Adventure Medical Kits in the first month.
4.) Urban Legend Blog
Starting next month, the website comes alive with our very own city soapbox, courtesy of the Urban Legend blog. We'll be bringing you the must do and must see from cities across the land, as well as a few titillating musings from our adventures in Britain's urban places. Tune in next month and see what the Urban Legend has to say about this, that or the other….
5.) Rat about Town - Rat Race and the Outward Bound Trust at the London Marathon 2009
26th April is a date etched on many runners' minds; and this year it's in our calendar too, as the Rat Race takes to the streets with the amassed running throng of the Capital for its inaugural dash in the London Marathon. Raising funds for our charity partner and youth Rat Race patron The Outward Bound Trust (more on the youth event in March's Ratfans issue), a giant Rat will be seen running (or possibly walking or crawling) through the streets. We think a PB is off the cards but our Rat will not be alone. Despite the crowds remember that in the city, you are never more than 10 metres away from a Rat!
In next month's issue, we will be announcing our prizes for the upcoming Rat Race adventure challenge season, including a new prize structure that offers high value travel-based prizes for "spirit of the Rat Race" and for those of you who are turning out for multiple events. We will tell you about the Youth Rat Race, spreading its wings to Edinburgh as well as another outing in London and we'll be bringing you another quality monthly comp, plus news on some of our international events and much much more….
Rat's all for now,
The Rat Race Crew
