Melbourne rat race 2009 results are available here.
Well, Rat Race Melbourne 2009 has been run and won and what a terrific event is was. In the now expected torrential rain on the Saturday evening, the rats excelled themselves in a point scoring frenzy. Some of the highlights were the insane duo that braved the Yarra water and dodged a few ferries in a cross harbour swim when the rest of the field ran around, the Melbourne Victory crowd that wondered how long the Rat Race team had been playing at the docklands stadium and of course the stellar performance by the elusive ‘rat’. There were tightropes, rock walls, bungy ball, 70’s disco, the advertising campaign, abseiling and the classic Kung Fu Fighting all packed into three hours.
Sunday main race kicked off with a light rat run and them the super exciting cycle descent from the top floor carpark bike compound via the ramps. Melbourne now holds the record for the most bike stacks in the first hour and even with the odd bruise here and there it was very entertaining. What a super course this year as we launched out past the ‘G’ and found our way to Anzac tunnel, a very long, very dark and for many, including the lead team, a very scary tunnel. Then a bit of ‘bouldering’ and a pleasant paddle on the river and then the teams raced to the hockey fields to take on the state goal keeper. How hard could it be to get a shot past the keeper? Caulfield race course was the abseil venue and a neat little challenge and this is around about the time the big dark cloud made its presence felt with a kick arse downpour. Bring on the eating challenge and the organisers have decided that hot chips are way too popular and we won’t do that again. Popularity is not a word to describe the diving tower a MSAC as this challenged many of the Rat Racers which means we will have to find something higher next year.
The lead teams flew around the course this year with a great battle between Outer Edge, Melbourne Forest Racers, SA Ambulance and Smiths Gully GS Racing for line honours. The SA Ambulance team smashed the course with the fastest Sunday time but with the points score from the previous night, the team from Outer Edge took the chocolates and the overall win. Special mention to Safiki for taking out the female team category, Melbourne Forest racers for taking out the lads category, Doc Dodgy and Co. (go Doc) for the Spirit of the rat race and Groove Train for exceeding our slowest time expectations by two hours.
Perth awaits for the Outer Edge team and I hear the locals are nervous.
Until Melbourne 2010, Chief Rat Wrangler over and out.
