As the Bristol Rat Race draws to a close for 2008 it's time to think back on all the action, the pain, and those incredible challenges that give the race it's unique Bristol flavor.

For the Mean Streets this year the event had an Olympic theme (but with a twist, naturally) and a suitably nautical element appropriate to an ancient Port: Torches to chase (but hopefully not extinguish), rhythm gymnastics on the Clifton Downs, cycling (on Choppers), a freestyle swimming relay with optional nudity, "sailing" on upturned sailing dinghies (strung end to end right across the Floating Harbour), hurdles (carrying milk crates) and kayaking (but blindfold, or it would have been to easy).

Bristol (and Bath) have been ratified

The dust has settled on Bristol and Bath after the first Rat Race of 2007 once again proved to be full of adrenaline, excitement and downright zaniness.

Saturday night’s mean streets prologue contained its usual mix of physical and farcical challenges, with marshals, not to mention the general public, being faced with karaoke in the street, terrible “brizzle” accents and men wearing make up singing “The Time Warp”. More physical challenges included the impressive abseil into the Avon gorge, cave orienteering, parkour, water slides, kayaking and the infamous chopper bikes. Read on...

Rats In Port

As a seafaring port Bristol has had some rats on it’s wharfs and waterways before, and they had some Rat Racers in the harbour last weekend for the first Crest Nicholson Rat Race Urban Adventure.

These rats explored the docks and waterways, but they also spread out to streets all round the city, to the rooftops and an office boardroom, bungeed and BMX’d, fired rifles and got shouted at by the Navy, scampered around in caves and abseiled into the Avon Gorge.

It was an action packed weekend, a very competitive race and great fun for experienced racers and those new to adventure racing. They all visited places in Bristol they’d never otherwise have found, and tried challenges that came as a complete surprise. Read on...
